Route 66 through Tulsa took several alignments over the years. In 1926-1932, at the corner of 2nd Street and Lewis Avenue, the Route began heading west toward downtown Tulsa. Now a residential district, this portion of Route 66 still contains some historic value.

I’ve written before about She Brews Coffeeshop and The Circle Cinema in the Kendall-Whittier neighborhood. Following the Route down 2nd Street one will encounter The Pearl District. This section of Tulsa contains many sites worth visiting along Studio Row, including The Church Studio where Leon Russell and Shelter Records recorded many tunes showcasing the Tulsa sound.

The Church Studio

Freeway Café #2 is located at 1547 E. 3rd Street (at the corner of 3rd and Trenton) in Tulsa’s Pearl District.

Building History (Lum’s and Ranch House Restaurant Era)

• The building originally housed the Ranch House Restaurant, which opened around 1967 and operated as a 24-hour spot popular in the 1970s. I used to work at Dowell, just down Utica Avenue, and the Ranch House was a great lunch spot.

• It had strong ties to Tulsa music history, particularly Leon Russell and the Tulsa Sound. In 1972, Leon Russell was eating lunch there with Shelter Records partner Denny Cordell and Carla Brown when they spotted the “For Sale” sign on the church across the street (304 S. Trenton Ave.). This led directly to Leon purchasing and converting the church into The Church Studio, a legendary recording studio.

Freeway Café Era

• Freeway Café (part of the local chain founded in 1991) occupies the space today. This specific location is one of their four Tulsa spots and is often called their “downtown” or Pearl District location.

  

  

• It maintains a classic retro diner atmosphere with a focus on all-day breakfast, comfort food, pies/pastries, and items like their famous “East Side” onion rings.

• The location is popular with locals and visitors, especially those touring The Church Studio right across the street. It’s walkable in the revitalized Pearl District and ties into the area’s music heritage.

This spot blends everyday diner fare with deep connections to Tulsa’s rock ‘n’ roll past—making it a neat stop for both food and history buffs. Hours are typically early morning to mid-afternoon. If you’re visiting, pairing it with a Church Studio tour is a great idea!

My neighbor Rob and I had lunch there recently and it is truly a modern day classic. Service was brisk this visit, and the waitresses are always friendly. I ordered chicken-fried chicken with mashed potatoes, corn and a salad. Meals come with a roll and portions are huge. Rob had chicken and dumplings with green beans. Coconut cream pie finished the meal and after this a nap was in the offing!

After our meal Rob and I followed Route 66 down 2nd Street and over to 3rd where it weaves its way into downtown and The Blue Dome district.

A West Tulsa Institution: The Story of Carl’s Coney Island

I’m wrapping up the reviews of eateries in Crystal City today with a classic, Carl’s Coney Island. While I most often choose The Coney I-lander for my coney fix, unfortunately there is not a location in West Tulsa. Carl’s fills that gap. On with the review!

There are restaurants, and then there are landmarks. Carl’s Coney Island, tucked inside the Crystal City Shopping Center on Southwest Boulevard in West Tulsa, belongs firmly in the second category. More than just a place to grab a hot dog, it is a living piece of Tulsa history — a no-frills, unapologetically local eatery that has outlasted trends, recessions, and countless competitors to remain one of the most beloved lunch spots on the city’s west side.

The Original Carl’s Coney Island has been a Westside staple for more than half a century, opened on October 21, 1971 by Carl Kennedy. Kennedy was already well-known in Tulsa’s food circles; he had sold Carl’s Chili to Tulsa-area restaurants for many years before planting his own flag in Crystal City. The name “Coney Island” carries weight in Tulsa. The city has a long and storied history with Coney dogs, or chili dogs — the Coney I-Lander regional chain and the downtown Coney Island restaurant were both launched in 1926, founded by a Greek immigrant named Christ Economou. Carl Kennedy was stepping into a competitive arena, but he had something unique to offer: a recipe and a location that would carve out their own devoted following.

Carl’s Coney Island is a mainstay in the historic Crystal City Shopping Center along Route 66 in Tulsa. That address is no small detail. Route 66 — the Mother Road — runs straight through the heart of West Tulsa, and the Crystal City Shopping Center has been a community anchor along that corridor for generations. For decades, the shopping center struggled through lean years, but Carl’s remained a constant. The fact that Carl’s kept going despite competition from local and long-established Coney dog eateries is a testament to its quality.

The menu at Carl’s is a celebration of hearty, unfussy American food with a distinctive regional character. The restaurant specializes in fresh, hot, and made-to-order coney dogs, but the menu extends well beyond that — authentic tamales, taco salads, 3-way spaghetti, hot links, and Polish sausages all have their place. Diners with hearty appetites stop in for southwestern-style chili, hot dogs with a variety of toppings, and Frito chili pie. Carl’s even carries pastitsio, a traditional Greek baked pasta dish made with bucatini noodles. That last item is a nod to Tulsa’s deep Greek culinary heritage — the same tradition that gave birth to the city’s original Coney dog culture nearly a century ago. At Carl’s, the old and the new, the Greek and the southwestern, sit comfortably side by side on a laminated menu.

The 3-way chili with cheese and onions has become something of a signature item, although I prefer mine without onions. It is considered the perfect indulgence. Frito Chili Pie, fresh chili ladled over a bed of Frito corn chips, is a filling meal on a cold day. These are not dishes designed to impress food critics or photograph well for Instagram. They are dishes designed to be eaten fast, to be deeply satisfying, and to make you want to come back next week.

Ownership of Carl’s has changed hands over the years, but each transition has come with a solemn commitment to preserve what matters most. When the restaurant reached its 50th anniversary in October 2021, owners Mike and Janet Cook sold the business to a couple from nearby Sand Springs, who pledged not to change the flagship items on the menu. That kind of promise speaks volumes about what Carl’s means to its community. Regular customers are not merely loyal — they are protective. They remember their first coney here, the afternoons spent at the counter, the smell of chili on a cold January day. A change to the recipe would feel like a betrayal.

Carl’s Coney Island lasting for 50-plus years is an accomplishment in any sector, particularly in a Crystal City Shopping Center that for years was moribund until it landed new owners about a decade ago. While shopping centers around the country hollow out and chain restaurants homogenize the American dining landscape, Carl’s has persisted by being exactly what it has always been — a neighborhood lunch counter that takes its chili seriously and its customers personally.

Yesterday, Tulsa set a new Guinness World Record on Saturday after 3,596 classic vehicles participated in the Route 66 Capital Cruise, surpassing the previous record by 1,105 vehicles and drawing an estimated 100,000 spectators along historic Route 66.

Thousands of classic cars, trucks and other vintage vehicles traveled the 5.5-mile route through Tulsa as part of the city’s Route 66 centennial celebration. Cars began leaving Expo Square at 8 a.m., with the final vehicle reaching the finish line near Mother Road Market at 11:30 a.m.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Empric announced the record after officials verified participating vehicles and reviewed event requirements.

“The mark to beat was set in Puerto Rico in 2017, and that was 2,491 vehicles,” Empric said. “Today, I can announce in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA, you had a total of 3,596 vehicles. Congratulations. You are officially amazing.”

Record Shatters Previous Mark

The previous Guinness World Record for the largest parade of classic vehicles was set in Puerto Rico in 2017 with 2,491 vehicles.

To qualify for Tulsa’s record attempt, participating vehicles were required to be at least 30 years old, meaning model year 1996 or older. Guinness officials counted vehicles as they crossed the finish line while stewards stationed along the route monitored compliance with record requirements.

While some vehicles were deducted during the verification process, Tulsa still surpassed the previous record by more than 1,100 vehicles.

Route 66 Celebration Draws National Attention

Organizers said more than 5,000 vehicles registered for the event, with participants traveling from 42 states, Canada and France to take part in the record-setting parade.

An estimated 100,000 spectators lined 11th Street and other sections of the route to watch the procession. Along the way, 16 Cruise Party Zones featured food, entertainment and activities for visitors.

Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols said the achievement will leave a lasting mark on the city’s Route 66 legacy.

“I am so proud of Tulsa and so thrilled to set a new world record,” Nichols said. “Now, for the next hundred years, whenever anyone mentions the Centennial of Route 66, they’ll remember Tulsa, Oklahoma.”

Nichols served as one of the parade’s grand marshals alongside Route 66 historian Michael Wallis, Vice Grip Garage founder Derek Bieri, members of Route 66 founder Cyrus Avery’s family and Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell.

Celebrating A Century Of Route 66

Pinnell said the event demonstrated Oklahoma’s leadership in preserving and promoting Route 66 as the highway marks its 100th anniversary.

“For years, we have looked to 2026 as a Super Bowl in Oklahoma, and today, Tulsa delivered,” Pinnell said. “Capital Cruise was a massive undertaking, and it paid off in a massive way, nearly doubling the existing world record.”

The parade featured vehicles spanning more than eight decades of automotive history. The oldest vehicle in the cruise was a 1913 Ford Model T.

Spectators also spotted several recognizable pop culture vehicles, including replicas from “Back to the Future,” “Jurassic Park,” “Ghostbusters” and the 1966 Batmobile.

Tow trucks were stationed along the route to assist participants in the event of mechanical issues, and an authentic Route 66-era Oklahoma Highway Patrol vehicle served as the parade’s final car.

I first encountered Arnold’s when they were in their original location at 51st Street and Union Avenue. I used to have a job running a concession stand at Reed Park baseball field just down the street, and could walk a mile to get a burger after my shift was finished or during a break. A double with cheese is great along with crinkle cut fries, or even better onion rings.

Arnold’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers has been a staple of Tulsa’s food scene since the 1980s. Walking into Arnold’s isn’t just a lunch stop — it’s a time machine. The 1950s vibe with blue booths and neon lights creates a nostalgic atmosphere for both locals and road trippers, while license plates, vintage lunchboxes, and an old-style jukebox playing classic tunes round out the décor. It is the kind of place that feels like it was always there — because, for most Tulsans, it has been.

The story behind Arnold’s staying power is deceptively simple. Owner Frank Arnold says the restaurant’s success comes down to consistency. “We haven’t changed our menu in probably 30 years,” he said. “It’s real simple, and when you keep it simple, you can focus on quality rather than quantity.” This philosophy isn’t just a catchy quote for a news segment — it is the operating DNA of the entire operation. I’d get bored if I wasn’t doing something.” Those words capture something essential about what makes Arnold’s special — it is a labor of genuine love, not merely commerce.

TamaleBoyz: Tulsa’s Homegrown Taste of Authentic Mexico

When I was a teenager we lived in West Tulsa. I attended Clinton Junior High and so walking to school, as well as delivering The Tulsa Tribune in the afternoons, required me to pass through Crystal City. I have many fond memories of those days, long before the 244 Bypass bisected the neighborhood.

Crystal City Shopping Center

Crystal City has a long history in Tulsa. Crystal City Shopping Center, located at 4261 Southwest Boulevard along Tulsa’s historic Route 66 corridor, is one of the city’s most storied retail landmarks. The site’s history stretches back to 1929, when William Falkenberg established the Crystal City Amusement Park next to the existing Electric Park, at a location made even more prominent by its designation as part of Route 66. The old amusement park was famous for having Oklahoma’s largest swimming pool and the state’s first miniature train, as well as the original Zingo roller coaster. After the bath house and Casa Loma dance hall burned in 1956, Crystal City Amusement Park closed for good, and investors quickly purchased and cleared the site for the construction of the Crystal City Shopping Center. The shopping center was developed in the 1950s by some of the same visionaries who created Utica Square.

Today, Crystal City remains a vital neighborhood hub for West Tulsa residents. It still operates on the west end of Tulsa’s Route 66 corridor, with vertical pillars inspired by the original amusement park’s architecture. After years of decline — businesses were boarded up and the complex was on the auction block in 2013, and a new grocery store moved in to anchor it in 2019 — the center has been making a comeback thanks to the overall development of Route 66 and the continued passion of Tulsa’s westside community. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​I will be revisiting several of the eating establishments that are available in Crystal City over the next few posts, the first of which is TamaleBoyz!

I first encountered TamaleBoyz when they were a food truck. They are so popular that it is worth examining their origin as well as the food. In any city there are restaurants that open, serve decent food, and quietly fade. And then there are places that become institutions — spots woven into the fabric of a community, sustained not by marketing budgets but by the kind of loyalty that only genuinely great food can earn. TamaleBoyz, tucked into a modest strip center on Southwest Boulevard in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is firmly in the second category. It is a restaurant born from necessity, built on family, and fueled by the kind of authenticity that cannot be manufactured.

The story of TamaleBoyz is, at its heart, a story about a boy and his mother. Owner Abel Murrieta Ruiz grew up selling tamales as a teenager alongside his mother, Elida Ruiz, simply to help pay the bills. Every Friday night, the family would cook the meat and shred it through the night — work that a young Abel admittedly dreaded at the time.  That early labor, however, planted the seeds of something remarkable. Abel and his family moved to the United States from Mexico when he was just three years old, and the tamale-making tradition that Elida carried with her became the foundation of what would eventually become a beloved Tulsa business.

The business began with almost nothing. Abel started by giving tamales away in parking lots to build his name and reputation. “We started with food stamps,” he has said, noting that even the bags used to distribute food were donated by a local church. From those humble beginnings, the enterprise grew steadily. Abel expanded to a snow cone shack and sold out daily, then graduated to a food truck, watching his fan base grow with each new venture. The name of the restaurant itself is a nod to Abel’s origins — as a little kid, he was the one delivering tamales, and the nickname “tamale boy” stuck, eventually becoming the identity of the entire brand.

The business’s growing popularity eventually led to the opening of a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Crystal City Shopping Center, southwest of downtown Tulsa in 2022. Despite its modest exterior in the unassuming strip center, the restaurant quickly became a local favorite. Abel later bought the space next door to use as a warehouse and prep area, and his brothers work alongside him in the kitchen while his mother continues to pour her heart and soul into the featured product. It is very much a family operation, and that closeness shows in both the quality and consistency of the food.

As one would expect, TamaleBoyz tamales are the centerpiece of the menu. Each tamale is handmade from traditional family recipes, using high-quality ingredients and careful preparation. The restaurant makes around 60 dozen tamales a day. chicken, beef, pork and “rajas” or pepper strips, for the vegetarian in the group.

But TamaleBoyz serves much more than tamales. The birria tacos are stellar as are other offerings like fried tamales and a tamale burrito. The menu also features birria plates, street tacos, and a salsa bar that, along with desserts like strawberry tres leches, rounds out a meal. Daily specials and other promotions are available for those who want more variety.

If you are short on time, the service at TamaleBoyz is super fast. The staff is well trained to provide great service. I’ve never been disappointed in any of my visits. They consistently rate high among Mexican restaurants and I’m sure that you will find something to please your palate.

At its core, Mother Road Market emphasizes three guiding principles: Do Good, Eat Well, and Shop Local. It features a curated selection of over a dozen food vendors (with more than 25 businesses total when including retail), offering diverse cuisines that range from Southern comfort to global flavors. Patrons can savor hot chicken, artisan ice cream, Brazilian pastéis, Korean-inspired dishes like those from Chicken and the Wolf (a permanent anchor tenant), wood-fired pizzas, scratch-made brioche donuts, and much more. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options abound, making it inclusive for varied diets. A central bar serves craft beers, wines, and cocktails, with occasional tastings and specials enhancing the experience.

• Route 66 Capital Cruise (May 30, 2026) — This is one of the biggest highlights, billed as the largest classic car parade ever and aiming for a Guinness World Record for the most classic cars through an intersection (targeting thousands of vehicles, with cars from 1996 or older invited). Ike’s Chili stands as a living piece of Tulsa’s history and a cherished stop along Historic **Route 66**, the iconic “Mother Road” that winds through the city. Established in 1908—just one year after Oklahoma achieved statehood—Ike’s holds the distinction of being Tulsa’s oldest continually operating restaurant and one of the oldest in the state. For over 117 years as of 2026, it has served generations with the same secret chili recipe, passed down through four generations of family ownership, embodying consistency, simplicity, and community spirit.

The story begins with founder Ivan “Ike” Johnson, a Texan who arrived in Tulsa around 1909 and worked as a waiter at a local chili parlor. Inspired by the chili he encountered—legend credits refinements to an Hispanic Texan cook named Alex Garcia—Ike launched his own modest operation in an alley near East Second Street and South Boston Avenue, close to the Frisco train depot. By 1910 or 1911, it became known as Ike’s Chili Parlor. The business relocated several times within downtown Tulsa, including a long stint at 312 S. Main Street starting in 1913, adapting to the city’s growth while preserving its core offering: a straightforward, no-frills chili made from an unwritten, closely guarded family recipe.

Ike’s chili is classic Midwestern/Oklahoma-style—rich, meaty, mildly spiced, and beanless in its purest form—served in bowls, atop hot dogs as Coneys, or in creative combinations. Signature dishes include the “Three-Way” (spaghetti topped with beans and chili), the “Four-Way” (adding onions or cheese), Frito pies, and simple chili burgers. The menu remains basic and focused, with additions like salads and hot dogs, but the chili remains the star. As co-owner Len Wade, a fourth-generation steward, often says, the key to longevity is straightforward: “Be yourself, take care of your customers, be consistent, don’t try to get too fancy.”

I love to enter Ike’s, order my usual “triple straight” chili and stop by the huge chili pot and pick up some club crackers to go with my meal. Classic stuff!

The restaurant’s fame grew early. Humorist and Tulsa favorite Will Rogers was a devoted regular, calling Ike’s chili “a bowl of blessedness” and choosing it over formal banquets. Other luminaries, from oil tycoons and laborers to later visitors like Martha Stewart (who praised it as the nation’s best chili) have made pilgrimages. In the 1960s, actress Peggy Cass appeared on the TV show *What’s My Line?* and declared Ike’s served “the most famous chili in the world.” More recently, Ike’s has won accolades at local chili cook-offs, including first place at the Horton Records Rock ‘n Folk ‘n Chili Cook-Off in 2022.

Though Ike’s predates Route 66 (designated in 1926), its current location at **1503 E. 11th Street** in Tulsa’s revitalized Pearl District/Meadow Gold District places it squarely on the historic highway. The move to this spot in 2014 was strategic, drawing both lifelong locals and travelers cruising the Mother Road. Today, Ike’s proudly markets itself as a must-stop on Route 66, where visitors can “eat some history.” The address sits amid murals, neon signs, and other vintage Route 66 landmarks, like the recent Hall of Giants, making it a perfect blend of old Tulsa and road-trip nostalgia. Social media buzzes with posts urging travelers to try a “three-way” here—the playful euphemism for the spaghetti-chili-beans combo has become part of its charm.

Resilience defines Ike’s legacy. It has weathered the Great Depression, world wars, economic shifts, the COVID-19 pandemic, and rising costs that challenge many eateries. Yet it endures, still family-run, with loyal patrons returning after 50, 60, or even 70 years, while new faces discover it daily. I love to travel and one of my favorite journeys is Route 66. I have been enamored with this highway since I was a boy and much of my life story is on the Mother Road. My father and his family were some of the original “Okies” who traveled Route 66 out West in the hard times during the Depression of the 1930’s. My sister and both of my in-laws are buried along the Route and in my career I worked on 11th Street in Tulsa, spending each day along this classic highway. Here is more of the history behind Route 66.

Route 66, often called the "Main Street of America" or "The Mother Road," is one of the most iconic highways in the United States, with a rich history tied to American culture, migration, and economic development. Below is a concise overview of its history:

Origins and Establishment (1926)

• Creation: Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926, as part of the U.S. Highway System, a federal initiative to create a network of paved roads connecting the nation. It was proposed by Cyrus Avery, an Oklahoma businessman, and John Woodruff, a Missouri highway official, who envisioned a diagonal route linking Chicago to Los Angeles.

• Route Details: Stretching 2,448 miles, it ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, ending in Santa Monica. The path connected rural communities to urban centers, following older trails like the National Old Trails Road and aligning with geographic features like the Santa Fe Trail.

• Purpose: Designed to facilitate commerce and travel, it linked small towns, farming regions, and growing cities, boosting economic development.

Early Years and Growth (1920s–1930s)

• Tourism Boom: The 1950s saw Route 66 as a prime vacation route, with families and travelers flocking to its kitschy roadside stops, Native American trading posts, and natural landmarks like the Painted Desert.

Decline (1956–1985)

• Interstate Highway System: The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, signed by President Eisenhower, prioritized faster, safer interstates. New highways (I-55, I-44, I-40, I-15, I-10) gradually replaced Route 66, bypassing many small towns and businesses.

• Decommissioning: By 1970, much of Route 66 was replaced or absorbed by interstates. On October 13, 1984, the final section in Williams, Arizona, was bypassed by I-40. Route 66 was officially decommissioned as a U.S. highway in 1985, removed from federal maps.

• Economic Fallout: Many towns along the route faced economic decline as traffic dwindled, leaving "ghost towns" with abandoned businesses.

Revival and Legacy (1980s–Present)

I took a Route 66 roadtrip to Saint Louis and want to report on a couple of places where I stopped to enjoy Mother Road Eats.

Ted Drewes on Chippeawa Street in Saint Louis is one of the classic stops on Route 66. I have eaten the frozen custard here several times and this time was another winner. I was able to stop by twice and so had two opportunities to try different flavors.

My first sundae was a Fox Treat, which consists of vanilla custard topped with hot fudge, raspberries and macadamia nuts. It was delightful and was soon gone. My second stop was topped off with a Cardinal Sin sundae: vanilla custard, hot fudge and tart cherries. This is perhaps my favorite and I dream of this when I think of Ted Drewes.

Ted Drewes Frozen Custard was founded by Ted Drewes Sr., a St. Louis native and accomplished tennis player who won the Muny Tennis Championships 12 times from 1925 to 1936 and the National Public Parks Singles title four times in the 1920s. Inspired by his travels and love for frozen custard, he opened his first stand in 1929 in St. Petersburg, Florida, while working for a carnival. He quickly expanded to his hometown, opening the first St. Louis location in 1930 on Natural Bridge Avenue near Goodfellow Boulevard (it moved westward along the avenue shortly after). In 1931, a second St. Louis shop opened at 4224 South Grand Boulevard. By 1941, a third location was established at 6726 Chippewa Street, which sits on historic U.S. Route 66 and became a popular stop for travelers. These early shops focused on high-quality frozen custard, setting the standard for the treat in the region.

Growth, Family Legacy, and Key Milestones

The business remained family-owned and operated, emphasizing the motto "Our Business Is Service," which prioritized quality, hospitality, and attention to detail. By 1958, the Florida and Natural Bridge locations had closed due to shifts in population and focus, leaving only the Chippewa and South Grand stands operational. The Chippewa site emerged as the flagship, benefiting from Route 66's fame, and extended its operating season beyond summer. In 1959, the iconic "concrete"—a thick frozen custard malt or shake served upside down to demonstrate its density—was introduced, becoming a signature item that draws crowds.

Ted Drewes Sr. passed away in 1968, after which his son, Ted Drewes Jr., took over and elevated the business. Under Ted Jr.'s leadership, the Chippewa location expanded significantly in 1985, growing from five to twelve serving windows to handle the increasing popularity. In 1962, the family diversified into selling Christmas trees, sourcing sustainable Canadian Balsam Firs from land in Nova Scotia (with annual reseeding for environmental responsibility). Ted Jr.'s son-in-law, Travis, later became involved in tree selection, and some trees are labeled "Dottie Trees" in honor of Ted Jr.'s wife. By 2006, the company was producing over 150,000 gallons of custard annually. Ted Drewes Jr. famously declined national franchising offers in 2013 to preserve the local, family-run tradition.

The business has weathered challenges, including a brief closure of the Chippewa store in 2013 due to a minor electrical fire and temporary shutdowns at South Grand during the COVID-19 pandemic (it reopened for summer 2023). As of 2018, it employed about 65 people.

Recent Events and Current Status

Tragically, Ted Drewes Jr., often called the "Frozen Custard King of St. Louis," passed away on August 26, 2024, at the age of 96, leaving a legacy of innovation and community impact. Now in its fourth generation of family leadership, Ted Drewes continues as a beloved St. Louis institution for over 95 years, operating two locations: the flagship at Chippewa (open year-round except January) and the seasonal South Grand stand (summer months only). It remains famous for its concretes, a variety of custard flavors, and the annual Christmas tree sales starting the day after Thanksgiving, complete with wreaths, roping, and hot chocolate. The shops are cultural landmarks on Route 66, drawing locals and tourists alike for their thick, creamy custard and tradition of exceptional service.

It is close to the Circle Cinema and a wonderful Mexican Bakery, as well as a Mexican Restaurant, so someone could spend the day exploring this unique area of Tulsa.

I appreciate the ladies who work at She Brews and I will add the history behind this unique shop later in this post. She Brews Coffee House in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is a nonprofit coffee shop and roastery with a mission to empower women transitioning from incarceration or difficult life circumstances. Its history is deeply tied to its founder, Rhonda Bear, who established the She Brews Coffee & Transition Program to provide housing, employment, and mentorship for women rebuilding their lives.

The journey began in 2008 when Bear and her husband launched the transition program in Claremore, Oklahoma, under His House Outreach Ministries. Drawing from her own experience of overcoming incarceration and addiction, Bear aimed to create a supportive environment for women, focusing on reuniting mothers with their children and addressing barriers like mental health issues, substance abuse, and societal stigma. The program offered residential housing, job training, and mentorship, achieving a 95% success rate in preventing recidivism among graduates.

In 2012, the first She Brews Coffee House opened in Claremore, providing employment opportunities for women in the transition program to build job skills and resumes. The Tulsa location at 1 N. Lewis Ave. followed, opening in June 2020. This site, a remodeled building where Bear once attended AA meetings, became a symbolic space for transformation, offering artisanal coffee and a welcoming atmosphere.

She Brews operates as a 501c3 nonprofit, with all proceeds supporting its mission. The coffee shops in Tulsa and Claremore serve sustainably sourced, hand-picked, micro-roasted coffee, including El Salvadorian and Ethiopian blends, and feature unique offerings like the Owl Pacino and siphon-style coffee. Beyond coffee, She Brews provides a community hub, fostering connection through events like latte art throwdowns.

Since its inception, She Brews has impacted over 200 women and 250 children, offering housing, educational resources, spiritual support, and employment. In 2022, the organization received the Impact Grant from Nominee Design and Supergiant, providing pro-bono branding and marketing services to expand its reach. Despite challenges, like a vandalism incident in March 2022 that shattered the Tulsa shop’s front window, She Brews remained committed to its mission, with manager Tisha Boyd emphasizing second chances and community support.

Today, She Brews continues to be a beacon of hope, combining quality coffee with social impact, empowering women to lead fulfilling lives while serving the Tulsa and Claremore communities. Be sure to say “hi” to Kiana, Sam and the rest of the crew.

Our next stop for Eats on Route 66 takes us to Coney I-Lander. This location is one of several in the Tulsa area and to be truthful, our standby is in downtown where you may sit in old school desks to dine, just like the olden days when they were located on 4th street, but that’s another story.

This location is directly across from The University of Tulsa Campus on 11th street and is a wonderful location to sample these classic coneys. Beth and I stopped by on a Saturday and had our usual: three cheese coneys, no onions, chips and a drink. While one used to be able to get this lunch for less than five dollars, it is closer to ten nowadays, but I am getting old! It was still a filling and nostalgic meal and one worth trying as you travel the Mother Road!

Here is a bit of the history behind this classic chain.

The history of Coney I-Lander in Tulsa, Oklahoma, begins in 1926 when Greek immigrant Christ Economou opened the original Coney Island Hot Weiner Shop in downtown Tulsa. Economou, who had previously run restaurants in Texas and McKeesport, Pennsylvania, introduced a small, slow-grilled hot dog served on a steamed bun, topped with a Greek-style, no-bean chili, mustard, and onions. This became known as the "coney," a dish inspired by the Coney Island hot dogs popularized in New York but adapted with a distinctive chili recipe that became a Tulsa staple. The affordability of the 5-cent coney helped the restaurant thrive through the Great Depression, making it a popular lunchtime option and embedding it in Tulsa’s culture.

In 1968, Christ Economou’s son-in-law, Chuck Kingsley, expanded on this legacy by opening the first Coney I-Lander restaurant, aiming to serve great coneys at a low price while maintaining a focus on customer service. Using simple ingredients and the same secret family chili recipe, Kingsley established a chain of seven locations across Tulsa and surrounding areas, including Broken Arrow, Jenks, and Owasso. The Coney I-Lander brand became a hometown favorite, emphasizing consistency with ingredients prepared at a central commissary to ensure the same taste across all locations. The menu remained simple, focusing on coneys, tamales, and spaghetti topped with the signature chili, along with Frito pies and, at some locations, loaded baked potatoes.

The original Coney Island Hot Weiner Shop, still operated by the Economou family (notably Jim Economou, Christ’s son), remains distinct from Coney I-Lander, with a slight variation in chili recipes. This family split led to two related but separate entities, with Coney I-Lander expanding into a regional chain while the original Coney Island stayed downtown. Some Tulsans prefer one over the other, citing differences in chili flavor, though both are cherished for their nostalgic appeal. Coney I-Lander’s coneys are celebrated for their compact size (two to four bites), steamed buns, and the unique chili, often enhanced with shredded cheese or cayenne pepper. The restaurants have become a generational tradition, with many Tulsans associating them with childhood memories and family outings.

In recent years, Coney I-Lander has modernized by offering nationwide shipping through Goldbelly and maintaining a strong social media presence. Reviews highlight the chain’s consistency, affordability (e.g., a 2024 Reddit post noted a meal for four with 12 coneys, chips, sodas, and cookies for $35), and cultural significance, though some newcomers find the chili’s distinct flavor unusual. The chain’s seven locations continue to serve as community hubs, with fans praising the quick service and nostalgic atmosphere, while others debate the quality of the hot dogs themselves. Despite occasional criticism, Coney I-Lander remains a Tulsa institution, rooted in nearly a century of tradition.

Today Beth and I visited one of our classic restaurants in Tulsa, El Rancho Grande. This Route 66 classic celebrates 72 years of dishing out Tex-Mex favorites to hungry travelers from around the globe. It was a great day for Mexican food and we always like to be waited on by our favorite server, Federico. El Rancho Grande is one of the city’s oldest Mexican restaurants, celebrated for its Tex-Mex cuisine and historic presence on Route 66. Founded in 1950 by Ruby Rodriguez, the restaurant initially opened on Boulder Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets, across from a Catholic church. In 1953, it relocated to 1629 E. 11th Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma, its current spot on Historic Route 66, where it has remained a Tulsa institution for 72 years.

The restaurant, known for its authentic Tex-Mex offerings, was established during a time when Tulsa’s Mexican population was growing rapidly. Ruby Rodriguez’s recipes, including the iconic “Night Hawk” combo, which was my choice today for lunch: two cheese and onion enchiladas with chili con carne and a soft cheese taco topped with queso. Federico informed me that “Night Hawk” is “Halcón de la Noche” or “ Halcón Nocturno” en Español! This classic dish is a hallmark of the restaurant’s menu and was named one of the five greatest Mexican meals in the United States in Gustavo Arellano’s book, *Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America*.

Other specialties include “Tulsa’s Best” cheese enchiladas, spicy Chile Colorado, homemade tamales, and another of my favorites, Chili Verde. Here is the menu:

El Rancho Grande was hit with a tax lien and went out of business in 1982, and subsequently was sold at a tax auction in 1984. John and Jeff Walden, two brothers whose family owned the building the restaurant was housed in purchased and reopened it later that year, rehiring many original cooks and waitstaff to preserve its culinary traditions. Their commitment to consistency—using Rodriguez’s original recipes and maintaining the same flavors—has kept generations of Tulsans returning. I have been dining here myself for years.

The restaurant’s iconic neon sign, refurbished in 2009, is a Route 66 landmark, drawing tourists and locals alike. In 2017, El Rancho Grande expanded with an upstairs Cantina featuring a bar, outdoor patio, and a Mexican street food menu, including street tacos and a variety of tequilas. I noticed today that several new items have been added to the menu, notably Chicharrones: fried pork rinds topped with chorizo and queso, and PBJ Jalapeños: peppers stuffed with chunky peanut butter, battered and fried and served with homemade pepper jam. We did not try these, but may do so on another occasion.

El Rancho Grande remains a beloved fixture in Tulsa’s Pearl District. It’s known for its warm service, historic ambiance, and dishes that reflect a bygone era of Tex-Mex cuisine. I think you will enjoy your visit as you travel Route 66 in Tulsa.
